Canterbury Success at National Championships

Canterbury's Connor Heap has taken out the singles titles at the National
14/u Championships. Connor (pictured above) found himself taking on his
doubles partner, second seed Pratt Keerasuntonpong from Central in the boys
singles final. The two players fought through a tight match, with some
aggressive play from both ends of the court, but it was Heap, the
tournament’s top seed, who came through to take the title in straight sets
7-5 7-5. The players then teamed up to play the doubles final, which came
down to a super tiebreak, and despite their best efforts they were runner
up. Connor carried this good form with him to the National 16/u
Championships which were played in Marlborough this week. Connor, the 11th
seed, was the best performing male beating both the 4th and 5th seeds before
losing to the hands of the 2nd seed in the semi-final.
In the girl’s doubles Gabby Coates was partnered by Elmwood team mate
Annabel Ellis (Southern). The girls knocked out the 8th and 2nd seeds to
claim the 14’s doubles title. The familiar partners won the final with
relative ease (6-2, 6-2). Gabby also progressed to the singles finals,
finishing runner up.

Clean Sweep for Burnside Park in ASB Premier Interclub Finals
Congratulations to the Burnside Park Premier Women’s and Men’s teams who
were victorious in windy but fine conditions for the ASB Premier Interclub
first round finals.

The Burnside Park Premier Women’s team, led by Joelene Feneon, won 5-1. The
top doubles match of Joelene Feneon and Sian English against Hagley Park’s
Michelle North and Beth Williamson went to a close third-set tie break. Both
teams had players of experience and youth which is good for the future of
women’s tennis in Canterbury at this top level.

The turning point in the Burnside Park Premier Men’s final win of 5-1
against Waimairi was a gruelling third set win by Burnside Park number one
Rob Nunnery over Waimairi’s James Spence. It was a hard fought match with
clever net play by Rob Nunnery to take out the third set tie break. Both
teams produced exciting tennis and good sportsmanship prevailed.
